Steps
Turn off both the hot and cold water supplies to the shower. Open the handle to drain the line and release pressure, then lay a towel in the tub to catch small parts.
Pry off the index cap on the handle with the small flat-head screwdriver. Undo the Phillips screw underneath and pull the handle straight off the stem.
Twist off the trim sleeve by hand. Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the bonnet nut or retaining ring that holds the cartridge in the valve body.
Grip the cartridge stem with the adjustable wrench or pliers and pull straight out. Twist gently side to side if it sticks, but do not lever against the valve.
Scrub the inside of the valve body with the toothbrush and a little rubbing alcohol. Wipe it clean with the towel and check the bore for grit or scale.
Compare the old and new cartridges and note the HOT and COLD markings. Set the temperature limit stop on the new cartridge to the same position as the old one.
Coat the new O-rings with a thin film of plumber's grease. Slide the cartridge in with the markings lined up and push until it seats fully.
Refit the bonnet nut or retaining ring and tighten it with the wrench. Screw the trim sleeve back on, then refit the handle and its screw and cap.
Turn the water back on slowly and let it run. Check around the trim for leaks, then test the temperature and confirm the drip has stopped.
Tips and common mistakes
Write down your valve model number before you shop, since Delta Monitor 1400 and 1700 series use different cartridges.
Never force the cartridge. If it will not seat, pull it out and check the O-rings are not pinched or twisted.
Grease only the rubber O-rings, not the whole cartridge, so grit does not collect inside the valve.
If the shower still drips after the swap, check the seats and springs or call a plumber before opening the wall.
Questions
How do I know which cartridge my Delta Monitor shower needs?
Look for the model number stamped on the trim or valve, or take the old cartridge to the store and match it. The 1400 and 1700 series cartridges are not interchangeable.
Why is my shower still dripping after replacing the cartridge?
Debris left in the valve body or a pinched O-ring will keep it leaking. Clean the bore again, grease the rings lightly and reseat the cartridge.
How do I set the temperature limit stop?
The stop ring on the cartridge controls how far the handle turns toward hot. Rotate it to match the old cartridge or to your preferred maximum temperature, then refit the handle.
