How to repair a windshield chip at home with a resin kit

A small stone chip in your windshield can often be filled at home with a resin repair kit, saving a trip to a glass shop. This guide suits anyone with a chip smaller than a coin that is not spreading. You need a shady spot, a clean windshield and about half an hour.

Steps

  1. Park the car in the shade and out of direct sun. Clean the chip area with glass cleaner, wipe it dry and pick out any loose glass with a pin.

  2. Check the damage. A chip under about 25 mm across can be repaired at home. A long crack or one in the driver's view needs a professional.

  3. Stick the suction cup bridge onto the glass so the injector sits centred over the chip. Press the cup down firmly so it holds.

  4. Screw the plunger in to create pressure, then back it out to pull a vacuum. Leave it for a few minutes so trapped air leaves the break.

  5. Fill the injector with resin as your kit says, usually 4 to 6 drops. Screw the plunger in slowly to push resin into the chip.

  6. Watch the chip fill. When the break looks clear of dark air pockets, release the pressure and remove the bridge.

  7. Place the UV curing film over the filled chip and move the car into direct sunlight for 5 to 15 minutes, or use a UV lamp.

  8. Peel off the film and scrape the hardened excess resin off with a razor blade held almost flat against the glass.

  9. Wipe the area with glass cleaner and check from inside and outside. A faint mark usually stays, but the chip should not spread.

Tips and common mistakes

Never repair a chip in direct sun or the resin can cure before it reaches the bottom of the break.

Tape over the chip if rain is due before you can repair it, so water and dirt stay out of the break.

Do not pick at the chip with a screwdriver, as this can turn a small pit into a spreading crack.

Wear gloves and eye protection, since resin irritates skin and scraping glass can send off splinters.

Questions

Will the repair make the chip invisible?

No. Most repairs leave a faint mark or slight distortion, especially on older chips. The aim is to stop the damage spreading and restore strength to the glass.

Can I repair a long crack the same way?

No. Kits are made for small round or star-shaped chips. A crack longer than a few centimetres, or one in the driver's line of sight, needs a professional repair or a new windshield.

How soon can I wash the car after repairing a chip?

Wait at least 24 hours before washing, and avoid high-pressure jets aimed straight at the repaired spot for a few days.
