Steps
Darken the room and sweep a UV blacklight low over the carpet. Urine shows as a dull yellow-green glow. Mark each outline with chalk so you treat the whole patch, not just the centre.
Blot fresh urine with paper towels, pressing straight down with your foot. Keep swapping towels until nothing more transfers. Do not rub, which pushes urine deeper into the backing.
Pour cool water over the spot and blot it up again. Repeat two or three times to dilute the urine that has already soaked into the fibres.
Apply an enzyme cleaner generously so it reaches the backing, not just the surface. A spray bottle works for small spots. A syringe lets you inject solution into soaked areas.
Let the enzyme cleaner sit for 10 to 15 minutes, or as long as the label allows. The enzymes need contact time to break down the uric acid that causes the smell.
Work the solution in with a stiff brush using short strokes. Then extract it with a wet/dry vacuum or carpet extractor, going over the area slowly to pull out the moisture.
Rinse with clean water and extract again. Repeat until the water you pull up runs clear. Leftover cleaner can attract dirt and leave a sticky patch.
Dry the carpet fast. Lay dry towels down and stand on them, then run a fan or dehumidifier for 6 to 12 hours. Damp backing is where smell and mould start.
If the padding is soaked through, lift the carpet edge, cut out the wet pad and replace it. Seal the bare subfloor with a shellac-based sealer before refitting the carpet.
Once everything is dry, sniff close to the spot. If any smell remains, repeat the enzyme treatment. Old or repeated accidents often need two or three rounds.
Tips and common mistakes
Never use steam or hot water on urine, because heat sets the stain and the smell into the fibres.
Skip ammonia and bleach cleaners. Ammonia smells like urine and can make your pet mark the same spot again.
Test any cleaner on a hidden patch of carpet first to check it does not fade the colour.
Wear gloves and ventilate the room when using enzyme or sealing products.
Questions
Will vinegar get rid of the smell?
Vinegar masks the smell for a while but does not break down the uric acid crystals. Use an enzyme cleaner for that, then a little vinegar rinse if you want.
Why does the smell come back on humid days?
Moisture reactivates uric acid salts left in the backing or padding. If the smell returns, the source was not fully flushed, so treat it again or replace the pad.
When should I call a professional?
Call one if the urine reached the subfloor, covers a large area, or has been there for months. They have extractors and subfloor treatments that home tools cannot match.
