What you need
Steps
Preview the chapter before you read a single paragraph. Look at the title, headings, subheadings, bold words, images and the summary at the end to see how the topic is built.
Turn each heading into a question. Write questions like "What is photosynthesis?" or "Why does this matter?" so your reading has a target.
Read one small section at a time, not the whole chapter in one go. Stop at the next heading and check whether you can answer your question.
Close the book after each section and say the answer out loud or write it down from memory. This active recall is what moves facts into long-term memory.
Take notes in your own words, keeping them short. Write one or two bullet points per section instead of copying whole sentences from the page.
Mark anything you could not answer and go back to that section only. Read it again slowly and rewrite the answer in your notes.
Review at the end of the session by covering your notes and reciting the main points. Then review again the next day and once more a week later.
Tips and common mistakes
Skip highlighting as your main method, since colouring a page feels like studying but does not test your memory.
Keep study blocks short, around 25 minutes, with a 5 minute break in between.
Answer the heading questions out loud so you notice gaps in your understanding straight away.
Questions
What does the P-Q-R-R method stand for?
Preview, Question, Read and Recall. You preview the chapter, turn headings into questions, read in small sections, then recall the answers from memory before reviewing.
How long should I spend on one chapter?
About 30 minutes for a normal chapter, split into short sections. If a chapter takes hours, you are probably copying notes instead of recalling.
Do I still need to reread the chapter before an exam?
Not by rereading it word for word. Test yourself with your heading questions and notes instead, and only reopen the parts you get wrong.
