What you need
Steps
Fill small pots with a 50:50 mix of seed compost and horticultural grit. Water the mix and let it drain before you take cuttings or sow seed.
Take 5 cm to 8 cm cuttings from healthy, non-flowering lavender shoots in late spring or early summer. Cut just below a leaf node with clean scissors.
Strip the lower 2 cm of leaves from each cutting. Leave a small tuft of leaves at the top and dip the base in rooting hormone if you have it.
Make a hole in the compost with a pencil, insert the cutting about 2 cm deep, and firm the mix around it. Space cuttings so leaves do not touch.
Water gently, cover the pot with a clear plastic bag or propagator lid, and place it in bright, indirect light. Keep the compost lightly damp, not soggy.
For seed, fill a pot or tray with seed compost, press the seed onto the surface, and barely cover it with a thin layer of vermiculite or grit. Keep at 18 C to 21 C.
For winter sowing, sow seed in a clear plastic container with drainage holes, label it, and leave the lid open for airflow. Place it outdoors in a sheltered spot and check moisture through spring.
Root cuttings in about 4 to 8 weeks. Tug gently to check for roots, then pot each plant into a larger pot of gritty compost.
Move young plants to a sunny, sheltered spot and water until established. Plant out in well-drained soil once roots fill the pot.
Tips and common mistakes
Take cuttings from shoots that are not flowering; flower buds use energy that roots need.
Never bury lavender seed deeply; it needs light and air to germinate well.
Water little and often, and avoid leaving pots standing in water, which can rot cuttings.
Label seed pots with the date and variety so you know what to expect.
Questions
When should I take lavender cuttings?
Take softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer, when new shoots are firm but not woody.
How long do lavender cuttings take to root?
Most take 4 to 8 weeks in warm, bright conditions. Check by gently tugging the cutting after 4 weeks.
Can I sow lavender seed in winter?
Yes. Winter sowing in a ventilated plastic container works well because cold then warmth helps germination in spring.
