Steps
Work on dry hair in daylight. Twist small sections and look for the thin, pale tips that split into two or three strands.
Snip each split about 3 mm above the damage with sharp hair scissors. This is dusting, so you only remove the broken tip, not length.
Wash with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and press conditioner into the mid-lengths and ends. Leave it on for 2 to 3 minutes and rinse cool.
Once a week, replace conditioner with a deep mask. Choose one with protein or oil, leave it for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse.
Squeeze water out with a cotton t-shirt or microfibre towel. Do not rub the hair against a rough towel.
Comb damp hair with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends and working upward in small sections.
Smooth a pea-sized amount of leave-in serum or heat protectant through the ends before you dry or style.
Keep heat tools at 180C or lower, use them no more than twice a week, and never on soaking wet hair.
Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase, or tie hair in a loose braid, to cut down on friction overnight.
Book a proper trim every 10 to 12 weeks so splits never travel far enough up the strand to need real length removed.
Tips and common mistakes
Use sharp hair scissors only, since kitchen or craft scissors crush the ends and cause new splits.
No product can mend a split once it forms, so trimming the tip is the only real fix.
Loosen tight ponytails and vary where you tie them to avoid breaking the same spot repeatedly.
Air-dry when you can, and never brush wet hair hard from the roots down.
Questions
Can split ends be repaired without cutting?
No, a split tip cannot be sealed back together permanently. Products only smooth the look of it, so snipping the individual split is the only way to stop it travelling up the hair.
Do I have to cut all my hair off?
No. Dusting removes a few millimetres from the damaged tips only, so you keep almost all your length while the splits stop spreading.
How often should I dust my ends?
Check every 2 to 4 weeks and dust any new splits you find. A full trim every 10 to 12 weeks keeps the ends strong in between.
