What you need

Steps

  1. Start by learning the five parts: the building or track test, brick test, picture position test, clock test and octagonal test. Each one checks how fast you spot a match, not what you have memorised.

  2. Take one test type per practice session. Work through sample questions slowly at first until you can say out loud what makes an answer correct.

  3. For the clock test, compare the hour hand and minute hand exactly. A clock showing 3:05 is not the same as one showing 3:25.

  4. For the brick, picture position and octagonal tests, look at where each mark sits relative to the corners and centre of the shape, not at the overall picture.

  5. Add a timer only after you can get a full set right. Then try to finish each set a little faster than the one before.

  6. Do a full mock of all five tests in one sitting, back to back, so you get used to switching between them without a long break.

  7. Keep a mistake log. Write down every wrong answer and which test it came from, then practise that test type the next day.

  8. On exam day, read the on-screen instructions and try the demo question before the timer starts. Sit square to the screen and keep your mouse hand relaxed.

Tips and common mistakes

Accuracy comes before speed, because a rushed wrong answer costs more than a slow right one.

Short daily sessions beat one long cram the night before the test.

Do not memorise answers from a practice set. Learn the pattern so new questions feel familiar.

Practise at the same time each day so your focus becomes a habit.

Questions

Is the ALP CBAT easy or tough?

Most candidates find it easy once they know the pattern. The real challenge is speed, not difficulty, so practise until spotting a match feels automatic.

Do I need maths or general knowledge for CBAT?

No. The CBAT is an observation and aptitude test, so your practice time should go on spotting matches quickly and accurately.

How long does CBAT preparation take?

A few weeks of short daily practice is usually enough. Cover one test type per session, then switch to full timed mocks in the last week.
