How to prepare for company aptitude tests in placements

You will build a study plan for the aptitude tests companies use in campus placements, covering the topics, timed practice and mock tests that raise your speed and accuracy. It suits students heading into their first placement season. You need the company test pattern, a question bank and a timer.

Steps

  1. Find the exact test pattern for each company you apply to: number of sections, question count, time limit and whether there is negative marking. Write it down before you start.

  2. Build a topic list from that pattern. Most company tests cover quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning and verbal ability, sometimes with a data interpretation section.

  3. Start with core maths topics: percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss, time and work, and time speed distance. These appear inside many other questions.

  4. Add reasoning topics such as number series, coding-decoding, blood relations, seating arrangement and syllogisms, then verbal topics like reading comprehension and grammar.

  5. Practise one topic at a time with 20 to 30 questions. Move on only when you get about 8 out of 10 right without checking the solutions.

  6. Learn the standard shortcuts for each topic and note them in one notebook, so you solve in two steps instead of five.

  7. Take a full timed mock test every week under real conditions: no phone, no pauses, and the same sectional time limits as the company test.

  8. Review every wrong answer and label the cause as a concept gap, a silly mistake or a time problem, then drill that weakness before the next mock.

Tips and common mistakes

Skip any question that takes more than 60 to 90 seconds and return to it at the end of the section.

Revise your formula and shortcut notebook for 10 minutes every day instead of rereading full chapters.

Do not guess in sections with negative marking unless you can eliminate at least two options.

Solve previous year papers of the same company in the final week to get used to its question style.

Questions

How early should I start aptitude practice before placements?

Two to three months of regular practice is enough for most campus tests. Start with one hour a day and raise it to two hours as the test date gets closer.

Which topics should I study first?

Begin with percentages, ratios and averages. They sit inside profit and loss, time and work, and data interpretation, so they pay off fastest.

Is a calculator allowed in company aptitude tests?

Most company tests do not allow one. Practise mental maths, squares up to 30 and rough approximation so you stay fast without it.
