Steps
Pick a pot at least 30 cm deep with drainage holes. Cover the holes with broken crocks or a layer of gravel so water can escape and bulbs do not rot.
Fill the bottom third with free-draining compost. Plant the tulip bulbs first, pointed end up, about 15 cm deep and 10 cm apart.
Add a 5 cm layer of compost over the tulips. Place the daffodil bulbs on top, pointed end up, spaced about 10 cm apart.
Cover the daffodils with another 5 cm of compost. Set the small crocus bulbs on this layer, close together but not touching.
Top up with compost to about 5 cm below the rim. This leaves room for watering and stops soil washing over the edge.
Water the pot well until water runs out of the drainage holes. Let it drain fully before moving it.
Put the pot somewhere cool and sheltered, like against a wall or in a cold frame. Keep the compost slightly damp through winter.
Move the pot to its display spot in early spring as shoots appear. Water when the top of the compost feels dry.
Tips and common mistakes
Plant in autumn, roughly September to November, so bulbs have cold weeks to root before spring.
Never let the pot sit in a saucer of water, as soggy bulbs rot quickly.
Use fresh compost rather than garden soil, which is heavier and may carry pests.
Deadhead flowers after blooming but leave the leaves to die back so bulbs store energy for next year.
Questions
Can I plant all three bulbs at the same depth?
No. Tulips go deepest, daffodils in the middle and crocuses near the top. Each layer needs its own depth so the bulbs do not crowd each other.
Will the bulbs survive frost in a pot?
Yes, most spring bulbs are hardy. The risk is the pot freezing solid, so keep it against a sheltered wall or wrap it in bubble wrap in hard frost.
How many bulbs fit in one pot?
For a 30 cm pot, about 10 tulips, 10 daffodils and 20 crocuses give a full display. Reduce the numbers for a smaller pot.
