What you need
Steps
Pick a pot at least 30 cm deep with drainage holes. Cover the holes with broken crocks or a layer of gravel so water can escape.
Fill the bottom third with compost. Press it down lightly so the layer is firm but not compacted.
Place the largest bulbs, such as daffodils or alliums, on the compost with the pointed end up. Space them about 5 cm apart.
Cover this layer with compost until the bulbs are buried. Leave a gap of about 8 cm before the next layer.
Add the medium bulbs, such as tulips, in the same way. Cover them with compost, again leaving room for the smallest bulbs.
Set the smallest bulbs, like crocus or muscari, on top and cover with a thin layer of compost.
Plant winter bedding plants such as pansies or violas over the top layer. Firm the compost around their roots.
Water well until it runs out of the drainage holes. Keep the pot outdoors in a light spot and water when the top of the compost feels dry.
Tips and common mistakes
Put the bulbs with the latest flowering time deepest, so the early ones come up first and hide the bare soil.
Never let the pot sit in a saucer of water over winter, as wet bulbs rot.
Label the pot with the bulb names so you know what is coming up next spring.
Questions
How deep should each bulb layer be?
A rough rule is to bury each bulb at about twice its own height. Leave at least 5 cm of compost between layers so roots have room.
Can I use any pot for a bulb lasagna?
You need a deep pot, at least 30 cm, with drainage holes. Shallow bowls will not fit three layers of bulbs.
When will the pot start flowering?
The smallest bulbs usually flower first in late winter, then daffodils and tulips follow into spring. Alliums often finish the display in late spring.
