What you need
Steps
Pick a pot at least 30 cm wide and deep with drainage holes. Cover the holes with broken crocks or a layer of gravel so water can escape.
Fill the bottom third with potting compost. Firm it gently but do not press it down hard.
Plant the tulip bulbs first, as they flower last and go deepest. Set them pointed end up, about 15 cm below the rim, spaced a bulb's width apart.
Add a layer of compost about 5 cm deep over the tulips. Plant the daffodil and narcissus bulbs on top, pointed end up.
Cover the daffodils with another 5 cm of compost. Plant the crocus bulbs near the top, about 5 cm below the final soil level.
Fill the pot to about 3 cm below the rim with compost. Water well until water runs out of the drainage holes.
Label the pot and place it somewhere cool and sheltered. Leave it outdoors through autumn and winter so the bulbs get the cold they need.
Check the compost through winter and water only if it dries out. Move the pot into light when shoots appear in late winter.
Tips and common mistakes
Plant more bulbs than you think you need, packed close but not touching, for a fuller display.
Use fresh potting compost, not garden soil, so the bulbs do not rot in a heavy, wet mix.
Keep the pot off soggy ground in winter by raising it on pot feet or bricks.
Do not cut the leaves off after flowering. Let them die back so the bulbs store energy for next year.
Questions
When should I plant a bulb lasagne?
Plant it in autumn, ideally September to November, so bulbs root before the cold sets in. Tulips can go in later than crocuses and daffodils.
Can I reuse the bulbs next year?
Yes, but flowering is often weaker the second year. Lift the bulbs after the leaves die back, dry them and store them cool until autumn.
How many bulbs fit in one pot?
A 30 cm pot takes roughly 10 to 15 tulips, 15 to 20 daffodils and 20 or more crocuses. Space them so they do not touch.
