What you need

Steps

  1. Tape your watercolor card to a flat board with masking tape so the paper stays flat while it dries.

  2. Load a round brush with clean water and wet the whole card evenly. Stop before puddles form on the surface.

  3. Drop two or three colors onto the wet paper, such as purple, orange and deep blue, and let them spread on their own.

  4. Tilt the board gently to move the paint and blend the edges, then lay it flat and let it dry completely.

  5. Mix black paint with a little water and paint your silhouette along the bottom, like a cemetery, bare trees or a cottage.

  6. Fill the silhouette in solid black, then add small details such as branches, crosses or a moon last.

  7. Let the card dry flat for about 20 minutes, then peel the tape off slowly and at an angle.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep the paper damp but not shiny, because too much water turns the colors grey and muddy.

Use no more than three colors in the sky so the background stays clean instead of muddy.

Leave the moon area unpainted so the background color shows through.

Test the black on scrap paper first so it is dark enough to stand out.

Questions

Do I need special watercolor paper?

Yes, use 300 gsm cold press watercolor paper or a blank watercolor card. Thin paper buckles and pills when you wet it.

How do I stop the colors going muddy?

Limit yourself to two or three colors and let the background dry fully before you paint the black silhouette on top.

Can I use acrylic or gouache for the silhouette?

Yes, black gouache or acrylic works on dry watercolor paper. Keep the layer thin so it does not crack.
