What you need
Steps
Write the two numbers one above the other, lining up the tens digits and the units digits in columns. For example, put 23 over 41.
Multiply the two units digits. Write down the units digit of that answer and carry the tens digit in your head.
Cross multiply: top tens times bottom units, plus top units times bottom tens. Add the carry from step two.
Write the units digit of that total as the middle digit and carry the tens digit to the left.
Multiply the two tens digits and add the carry. Write that in front. For 23 x 41 you get 943.
For numbers near 100, use the base method. Take 97 x 94: the gaps are 3 and 6. Cross subtract 97 minus 6 to get 91, then multiply the gaps, 3 x 6 = 18, giving 9118.
Check your answer roughly. 23 x 41 is near 20 x 40 = 800, so 943 is in the right range.
Practise ten sums a day, saying the cross step aloud until you stop writing the carries down.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep the carries small by writing them above the next column so you do not lose them.
Do the cross step in the same order every time so it becomes automatic.
Estimate first with round numbers to catch a slipped digit.
Start with easy pairs like 21 x 13 before moving to numbers with carries.
Questions
Does the crosswise method work for any two-digit numbers?
Yes. It works for every pair of two-digit numbers, with or without carries. Carries just get added to the next column on the left.
How long before I get faster?
Most people notice a difference after a week of ten sums a day. Speed comes from repeating the same order of steps, not from doing long sessions.
What is the base-100 shortcut for?
It is a quick route for numbers close to 100, like 96 or 103. Subtract the gaps crosswise, then multiply the gaps to get the last two digits.
