How to make an SVG file in Canva for Cricut

You will build a design in Canva, export it as an SVG and upload it to Cricut Design Space without the unsupported items error. It suits anyone with a Canva Pro, Teams, Education or Nonprofits plan and a Cricut machine. You need to know which Canva elements are real vectors before you export.

Steps

  1. Check your Canva plan first. SVG and transparent PNG downloads only work on Canva Pro, Canva for Teams, Canva Education and Canva for Nonprofits.

  2. Build the design from plain shapes, lines and text. Avoid frames, photos dropped into shapes, pattern fills and linked images, because Cricut treats these as clipping paths and rejects them.

  3. Test whether an element is a real vector. Zoom right in on the canvas: a vector keeps clean edges, while a photo or raster element turns blocky and pixelated.

  4. Keep the file under 5000 paths. Design Space refuses anything above that with an upload error, so use fewer elements and simple shapes.

  5. Click Share, then Download, and choose SVG as the file type. Canva turns your text into outlines automatically during this export.

  6. Upload the SVG to Cricut Design Space. If you see the message about unsupported items, delete frames, pattern fills and photos, then export again.

  7. Weld your text in Design Space before cutting. Each letter exports as its own closed shape, so script fonts will fall apart without welding.

  8. Run your checks before cutting: no pattern fills, no frames or clipping paths, no photos, under 5000 paths, text welded, and each colour on its own layer.

Tips and common mistakes

Welding cannot be undone once the project is saved, so duplicate the design before you weld.

A file that uploads fine but cuts a plain rectangle was never a vector. Zoom in to check before exporting.

Use Print Then Cut for photos and multi-colour artwork instead of forcing them into an SVG.

Design Space splits your SVG into layers by colour, so plan each colour as a separate cut.

Save the Canva design as well as the SVG, so you can edit and export again later.

Questions

Why does Design Space say my file includes unsupported items?

The SVG contains something Cricut does not allow, such as pattern fills, clipping paths, editable text or linked images. Remove frames, photos dropped into shapes and pattern fills, then export again.

Do I need Canva Pro to download an SVG?

Yes. SVG and transparent PNG downloads are only available on Canva Pro, Canva for Teams, Canva Education and Canva for Nonprofits plans.

Why does my uploaded SVG cut as a rectangle?

The element was a raster image, not a vector. Canva does not label which elements are vectors, so zoom in and check the edges before you export.
