How to make a stuffed fabric pumpkin by hand

Turn one 7 x 16 inch piece of fabric into a small stuffed pumpkin using simple hand stitches. It suits beginners who can thread a needle and sew a basic backstitch, and no sewing machine is needed. You will stuff the shape, add twine sections, and finish it with a felt stem and leaves.

What you need

Steps

  1. Cut your fabric to 7 x 16 inches. Fold it in half with the right sides facing, then sew the long side seam with a backstitch and a small seam allowance.

  2. Knot your thread and sew a running stitch all the way around the bottom edge. Pull the thread gently to gather the bottom into a closed circle.

  3. Turn the fabric right side out through the open top. Push polyfill into the opening a handful at a time and pack it into the bottom corners.

  4. Sew a running stitch around the top edge and pull it tight to close the pumpkin. Knot the thread firmly so it holds.

  5. Wrap baker's twine from the top, down through the middle and back up to the top to make six or eight sections. Pull each wrap snug and knot the twine at the top.

  6. Roll a piece of wool felt into a short tube for the stem. Glue the edge down, then hot glue the stem to the top of the pumpkin over the twine knot.

  7. Cut two or three leaf shapes from wool felt. Stitch a line down the middle of each leaf, then glue the leaves beside the stem.

  8. Add a button, ribbon or small flowers near the stem if you like. Fluff the pumpkin back into shape and trim any loose threads.

Tips and common mistakes

Double your thread and knot it well, because a single strand can snap when you pull the gathers tight.

Stuff firmly but stop before the fabric bulges, or the top edge will be hard to gather closed.

Space the twine wraps evenly by counting the sections as you go, and hide the knot under the stem.

Watch your fingers when using the hot glue gun and let the glue cool before you press the felt down.

Questions

Do I need a sewing machine?

No. The whole pumpkin is sewn by hand with a backstitch for the side seam and running stitches for the top and bottom gathers.

How much fabric makes one pumpkin?

One piece cut to 7 x 16 inches makes a single small pumpkin. Use a fat quarter or fabric scrap with a print you like.

Why do my pumpkins look lumpy?

The stuffing is probably uneven or too loose. Add small pieces of polyfill and push them into the corners before you close the top.
