What you need
Steps
Collect your supplies: old fabric, needle and thread, glass wool or polyester stuffing, acrylic paint, corn husks, a paintbrush, scissors and a short wooden branch for the stem.
Cut a wide circle from your fabric, about the size of a dinner plate for a small pumpkin. Cut two circles if the fabric is thin, so the stuffing cannot show through.
Sew a running stitch around the edge of the circle, about 1 cm in from the raw edge. Leave the thread long and do not tie it off yet.
Pull the thread gently to gather the fabric into a bowl shape. Knot it loosely so the opening holds while you fill it.
Stuff the pouch with glass wool, pushing it into the sides first and then the middle. Fill it firmly but stop before the seams start to strain.
Pull the gathering thread tight to close the top, then stitch across the opening a few times. Knot the thread and trim the end.
Wrap strong thread around the whole pumpkin from top to bottom and back again, pulling firmly. Repeat 6 to 8 times, spacing the wraps evenly to form the ridges.
Cut leaf shapes from corn husks and dip them in water to soften them. Paint the leaves with green or brown acrylic and let them dry flat.
Dry brush the fabric with orange acrylic paint, using a light touch. Leave some of the original fabric showing for a worn, rustic look.
Glue the corn husk leaves around the top of the pumpkin. Push the wooden branch into the centre as the stem and let everything dry.
Tips and common mistakes
Use a doubled thread for the gathering stitch so it does not snap when you pull it tight.
Keep your fingers behind the needle and cut fabric on a stable surface, away from your hand.
Stuff the pumpkin firmly before adding the ridges, otherwise they will sag.
Test the acrylic paint on a scrap of fabric first, as some fabrics soak up more colour than others.
Questions
How much fabric do I need for one pumpkin?
A single circle about 30 cm across is enough for one small pumpkin. Medium weight cotton or linen holds the shape best.
Can I use polyester stuffing instead of glass wool?
Yes. Polyester toy filling works the same way and is easier to find. Glass wool gives a firmer, heavier finish.
How do I stop the ridges from slipping?
Knot each wrap at the top and bottom and sew through the stem area a couple of times. Strong button thread grips better than regular sewing thread.
