What you need
Steps
Draw a boot-shaped stocking outline on paper, about 45 cm from cuff to toe and 20 cm wide at the top. Cut it out to use as your template.
Fold your fabric with the right sides together. Pin the paper template on top, trace around it with chalk, and cut two matching pieces.
Sew the two pieces together with a 1 cm seam allowance, leaving the top edge open. Backstitch at the start and end so the seams hold.
Snip small notches into the curved heel and toe seams. Turn the stocking right side out and press the seams flat with an iron.
Cut a cuff strip about 12 cm tall and as wide as the stocking opening. Sew the short ends together, fold it in half, and stitch it around the top edge.
Fold a 15 cm strip of fabric or ribbon in half for the hanging loop. Sew it into the inside back seam of the cuff before you finish the top.
Lay faux pine branches along the cuff and glue them down with a hot glue gun, working from one side to the other so the glue does not cool too soon.
Glue on the pinecones, then tuck in small blue and silver ornaments and a few snowflake details between the branches. Let the glue dry fully before hanging.
Tips and common mistakes
Test the hot glue on a scrap of your fabric first, since some fleece and glitter fabrics melt or soak up glue.
If you have no sewing machine, use felt and glue the seams instead, because felt edges do not fray.
Keep the glue gun tip away from the fabric surface and press decorations on with a cocktail stick to avoid burned fingers.
Stuff the stocking lightly with tissue paper while gluing so the front and back do not stick together.
Questions
Can I make this stocking without a sewing machine?
Yes. Use felt or fleece and join the pieces with fabric glue or a simple running stitch by hand. The cuff and loop can be glued in the same way.
How big should a Christmas stocking be?
A stocking about 45 cm tall and 20 cm wide at the top fits small gifts and looks right on a mantel. Scale the paper template up or down before you cut the fabric.
What fabric works best for a decorated stocking?
Cotton, felt, fleece and burlap all work well. Pick a firm fabric that holds its shape, and choose a plain colour so the pine branches and ornaments stand out.
