What you need
Steps
Clear the room and pull up the old flooring. Remove the baseboards so you can reach the wall edge.
Check the subfloor is flat, dry and clean. Sweep it, fix loose boards, and test concrete for moisture with a plastic sheet taped down overnight.
Roll out the underlay across the room. Butt the seams and tape them so the sheets do not slide.
Measure the room width and divide by the plank width. If the last row would be under 5 cm, trim the first row narrower so both edges look even.
Start in a corner with the tongue facing the wall. Slide spacers between the planks and the wall to keep a 8 to 10 mm expansion gap.
Click the next plank into the short end at an angle, then lower it onto the long edge. Tap gently with the tapping block, never directly on the plank edge.
Stagger the joints by at least 20 cm between rows. Cut the last plank of each row with a saw and use the offcut to start the next row.
Use the pull bar to close the last plank against the wall. Work row by row across the room.
Cut door casings and pipe holes with a jigsaw or utility knife, leaving the expansion gap around them.
Remove the spacers, refit the baseboards, and add a trim strip at doorways. Leave the floor free of heavy furniture for 24 hours.
Tips and common mistakes
Acclimatise the boxes in the room for 48 hours before laying so the planks do not shrink after fitting.
Never skip the expansion gap. Tight planks against the wall will buckle when the room warms up.
Tap planks with a block and rubber mallet, not a metal hammer, or you will crush the click edges.
Keep the underlay seams taped and overlapped so the planks do not shift or squeak.
Questions
Do I need glue for click laminate?
No. Click laminate floats and locks together without glue. Glue is only used on the tongue of some brands for extra moisture protection.
Can I lay laminate over old tile?
Only if the tile is flat, sound and fully bonded. Uneven grout lines will show through, so fill them or use a thicker underlay first.
How long should laminate sit before installation?
Leave the boxes flat in the room for about 48 hours so the planks adjust to the room temperature and humidity.
