Steps
Clear the room and remove old flooring. Sweep and vacuum the subfloor so no grit sits under the planks.
Check the floor is flat. Fill dips and sand high spots; most laminate makers allow about 3 mm over 2 m.
Roll out the underlay over the whole floor, butt the seams and tape them. Trim it at the walls.
Measure the room width and cut the first row so it is at least 50 mm wide. Cut the tongue side facing the wall.
Lay the first row along the longest wall with spacers against the wall. Click the short ends together.
Start the next row with a cut plank so joints are staggered at least 200 mm from the row before.
Angle the long edge into the previous row and press down until it clicks. Use the tapping block on the short ends.
At the last row, measure the gap to the wall, cut the planks lengthwise and pull them in with the pull bar.
Remove all spacers. Fit skirting or beading over the expansion gap, nailing it to the wall, not the floor.
Tips and common mistakes
Leave a 10 mm expansion gap at every wall and around pipes, or the floor will buckle in warm weather.
Bring the packs into the room for 48 hours before fitting so the planks adjust to the room.
Cut planks face down with a fine-tooth blade to reduce chipping on the surface.
Never tap planks directly with the mallet; always use the tapping block to protect the click edge.
Questions
Do I need underlay under laminate?
Yes, most laminate needs an underlay for comfort and to even out small bumps. Check your plank instructions for the type allowed.
Can I install laminate over concrete?
Yes, if the concrete is dry and flat. Lay a moisture barrier first if the maker asks for one.
How long before I can walk on it?
Straight away for light foot traffic. Wait about 24 hours before moving heavy furniture back in.
