Steps
Wipe the window frame clean with a damp cloth and let it dry completely. Dust, grease and damp stop the double sided tape from holding.
Measure the window with a tape measure. Add 2 inches to both the width and the height so you have spare film to shrink and trim later.
Cut the film to those measurements with scissors, working on a flat surface so the sheet stays smooth and free of creases.
Apply the double sided tape around the outside edge of the window frame. Press it down firmly, then peel off the paper liner.
Press the top edge of the film onto the tape first, smoothing it across with your hand. Work from the middle outwards so no air pockets form.
Repeat along both sides and then the bottom, pulling the film gently but not stretching it, until all four edges are sealed.
Run a hair dryer on the hot setting a few inches from the film, moving it back and forth until the wrinkles pull tight and the surface goes clear.
Trim any film hanging past the tape with scissors, then run your hand around the edges to check the seal is tight and even.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep the hair dryer moving and a few inches away, because holding it in one spot can melt or tear the film.
Let the heat do the shrinking rather than stretching the film tight when you press it on.
Apply the tape only to a dry frame, since tape will not stick to a damp or icy surface.
Remove the film and tape slowly at the end of the season and warm the tape with the hair dryer to loosen the adhesive.
Questions
How much bigger than the window should I cut the film?
Add 2 inches to the width and 2 inches to the height. The extra film gives you room to grip the edges and allows for shrinkage.
Can I use a normal hairdryer to shrink the film?
Yes. Any hairdryer on a hot setting works. Keep it moving a few inches from the surface until the wrinkles disappear.
Will the tape damage my paint or window frame?
The tape is made to peel away, but pull it off slowly and warm it first with the hair dryer. That loosens the glue and lowers the risk of lifting paint.
