Steps

  1. Open your document and click where the table should go. Word inserts tables at the cursor, so place it on an empty line first.

  2. Go to the Insert tab, click Table and drag over the grid to pick rows and columns. Release the mouse to drop the table in place.

  3. Click inside the table and use the Table Design and Layout tabs that appear. These hold the style, border, row and column options.

  4. To add rows or columns, click in a cell and choose Insert Above, Insert Below, Insert Left or Insert Right on the Layout tab.

  5. To remove rows, columns or the whole table, select them and use Delete on the Layout tab. Pick Delete Table to remove everything at once.

  6. Select two or more cells, right-click and choose Merge Cells to combine them. Use Split Cells to divide one cell into several.

  7. Set the table width and alignment from the Layout tab or by dragging the table edge. Use AutoFit to fit contents or the window.

  8. Pick a ready-made style from the Table Design tab, then adjust borders and shading. Turn on Header Row so the top row repeats on each page.

  9. For page setup, use Insert, then Cover Page, Blank Page or Page Break. A page break pushes content to the next page without adding empty lines.

Tips and common mistakes

Press Tab in the last cell to add a new row quickly instead of using the menu.

Turn on Repeat Header Row so long tables keep their column titles on every page.

Use Page Break instead of pressing Enter many times to start a new page.

Save your file before heavy table edits so you can undo mistakes easily.

Questions

How do I delete a table in Word?

Click anywhere in the table, open the Layout tab and choose Delete, then Delete Table. Selecting the table and pressing Backspace also works.

Why does my table jump to the next page?

The table may be wider than the page or set to not split across pages. Check the table width and the row properties under Layout.

Can I make the top row repeat on every page?

Yes. Select the header row, open the Layout tab and click Repeat Header Rows. It only works when the table spans more than one page.
