Steps
Take your puppy outside first thing in the morning, after every meal, after naps, after play, and before bed. Keep the times the same each day.
Supervise your puppy indoors. Keep it on a leash with you or in a crate or pen when you cannot watch it. This stops hidden accidents.
Go to the same outdoor spot and stand still. Say a cue such as go potty, then wait 5 to 10 minutes without playing or chatting.
Reward straight after your puppy finishes. Give a treat and calm praise within two seconds, while it is still outside.
If nothing happens, bring your puppy back inside and confine it. Try again 10 to 15 minutes later. Do not let it roam.
Clean accidents with an enzyme-based cleaner, not ammonia. Ammonia smells like urine and can make the spot attractive again.
Feed meals at set times and note when your puppy needs to go. If accidents continue after a few weeks, ask your vet about a urinary infection.
Tips and common mistakes
Never scold or rub your puppy's nose in an accident. It teaches the puppy to hide and go where you cannot see.
Watch for sniffing, circling and whining. Those signs mean take your puppy out right away.
A young puppy often needs a potty trip every 1 to 2 hours while awake. Plan around that, not around your own schedule.
Questions
How long does house training take?
Many puppies need a few weeks of perfect consistency, and some take several months. Age, breed and your routine all affect how fast it goes.
Why does my puppy pee right after coming inside?
It may have been distracted outside or not fully emptied its bladder. Wait a little longer in the same spot and reward as soon as it goes.
Should I use puppy pads?
Pads can help in a flat or during bad weather, but they can slow outdoor training. If you use them, move them closer to the door and then outside.
