Steps

  1. Read the label and check the dose your vet prescribed. Warm the bottle by rolling it between your hands for a minute so the liquid is not cold.

  2. Pick a quiet room and a time when your cat is relaxed. Put the towel, cotton pad and treats within reach before you start.

  3. Hold your cat gently against your body, or wrap them in a towel with one ear free. Keep your voice low.

  4. Lift the ear flap so you can see the opening of the ear canal. Do not twist or bend the ear.

  5. Hold the bottle just above the ear canal without touching it. Squeeze in the number of drops your vet prescribed.

  6. Let go of the ear and let your cat shake their head. This spreads the medicine down the canal.

  7. Wipe any drops off the outside of the ear with a cotton pad. Never push a cotton bud into the canal.

  8. Give a treat and praise your cat straight away. Wash your hands and note the time of the dose.

Tips and common mistakes

Finish the whole course your vet set, even if the ear looks clean after a couple of days.

Never use leftover drops or medicine made for another pet, as some products are toxic to cats.

If your cat cries, bleeds or the ear looks worse, stop and call your vet.

Ask a second person to hold the cat if you live with someone, as it keeps the head still.

Questions

How do I know my cat needs ear drops?

Only a vet can tell. See your vet if your cat shakes its head, scratches its ear, or the ear smells or looks red.

How often should I give the drops?

Follow the label and your vet's instructions exactly. The usual pattern is once or twice a day for a set number of days.

What if my cat will not stay still?

Try wrapping them in a towel with one ear out, or ask someone to help. Your vet can also show you a hold that suits your cat.
