How to fit reflective foil insulation to a single glazed window

Reflective foil fixed over the glass bounces heat back into the room in winter and keeps summer sun out. It suits renters and anyone with old single glazing who wants a quick, removable fix. You only need a tape measure, scissors and tape, and the foil comes off without damage.

What you need

Steps

  1. Measure the width and height of the glass and frame with a tape measure. Write the numbers down so you can cut the foil once, not twice.

  2. Wipe the glass and frame with a damp cloth and let them dry fully. Dust and grease stop tape from sticking.

  3. Lay the foil flat and cut it to your sizes, adding about 25mm on each side so it overlaps the frame. Use a straight edge for clean lines.

  4. Run double-sided tape around the frame edge, then press the foil on from the top down. Smooth it from the centre outwards to push out creases.

  5. Tape right around the outer edge so no warm air slips behind the foil. Small gaps let condensation form on the cold glass.

  6. Check the window still opens, closes and locks as normal. Refit or trim the foil if it catches on the handle or hinges.

Tips and common mistakes

Foil blocks the view and daylight, so fit it in rooms you use at night or leave one window uncovered.

Use removable tape if you want to take the foil down in summer and let the breeze in.

Keep trickle vents open or air the room each morning to cut condensation behind the foil.

Cut on a board and keep your fingers behind the blade when using a craft knife.

Questions

Will foil insulation cause condensation?

Some condensation can form on the cold glass behind the foil. Sealing the edges tightly and airing the room daily keeps it down.

Can I fit it over double glazing?

Yes, but check the manufacturer's advice first. Reflective foil works best on single glazing, where heat loss through the glass is highest.

Does it damage the window frame?

Not if you use removable tape or the kit's fixings. Peel the tape off slowly and wipe away any sticky residue.
