Steps
Check the tread direction before you start. With the gears at the back, the tread should point the same way the wheel rolls forward.
Fit one side of the tyre bead onto the rim by hand, working around the wheel. Leave the other side off for now.
Line the tyre label up with the valve hole. If you get a flat later, you can pump the tube and find the hole near that spot.
Put a small amount of air in the tube so it becomes round. This makes it easier to seat and helps stop pinching.
Push the valve through the rim hole first, then tuck the rest of the tube inside the tyre all the way around.
Start at the valve and push the second bead onto the rim with the heel of your hand. Work around, checking the tube is not trapped under the bead.
At the last tight section, turn a tyre lever upside down and hook the bead up onto the rim. Keep checking you are not pinching the tube.
Run your fingers around both sides of the tyre to confirm the tube sits fully inside and no rubber is caught.
Pump the tube up to the pressure printed on the tyre sidewall, then check the bead line sits evenly around the rim.
Tips and common mistakes
A pinched tube causes a pinch flat, so stop and ease the bead back if it feels tight.
Seat the tyre label at the valve so you can find punctures fast next time.
Use the tyre lever gently and never force it, or you can damage the tube or rim.
Check the tyre pressure on the sidewall and refit the wheel before you ride.
Questions
Do I need to remove the wheel to fit a new tyre?
It is much easier. Take the wheel off the bike first, then fit the tyre and tube on a clean, flat surface.
How do I know which way the tyre should face?
Look for an arrow on the sidewall. If there is none, the tread should follow the forward roll of the wheel, with the gears at the back.
Why does the tube keep getting pinched?
The tube is probably not inflated slightly or is trapped under the bead. Add a little air and work the bead on slowly with your hands.
