What you need

Steps

  1. Measure the window and decide where the pole will sit. Let the pole run about 15 to 20 cm past each side of the window so the curtains can open clear.

  2. Hold a bracket against the wall about 5 to 10 cm above the window frame. Check it is level with a spirit level, then mark the screw holes with a pencil.

  3. Run a stud finder over the marked area to check for pipes and cables. Switch off the power at the consumer unit if you are drilling near sockets or switches.

  4. Drill pilot holes at each mark with a bit slightly smaller than your wall plugs. New build plasterboard often needs hollow wall anchors rather than standard plugs.

  5. Push the plugs or anchors into the holes and tap them flush with a hammer. Screw each bracket to the wall with the screws in the kit.

  6. Slide the curtain rings and finials onto the pole before you lift it. Check the pole fits the brackets and that any joining piece is tight.

  7. Clip or slot the pole into the brackets and tighten the bracket screws. Ask a helper to support long poles so they do not twist or drop.

  8. Hang the curtains on the rings with hooks, then open and close them a few times. Adjust the rings or brackets if the curtains catch or drag.

Tips and common mistakes

New build walls are often plasterboard on dot and dab, so test a fixing before hanging heavy curtains.

Keep drilling dust down by holding a vacuum nozzle near the drill bit.

Use a step ladder on firm ground and do not overreach.

Questions

What fixings should I use in a new build wall?

Use hollow wall anchors or plasterboard fixings for plasterboard, or screw into a wooden stud if the stud finder finds one. Standard plastic plugs may pull out under the weight of a pole and curtains.

How high should a curtain pole go above the window?

A common height is 5 to 10 cm above the window frame, or higher if you want the room to look taller. Check the bracket position with a spirit level before drilling.

Can I fit a curtain pole without a drill?

Not usually on a plasterboard or masonry wall. You need holes for the brackets, so borrow or hire a drill if you do not own one.
