What you need

Steps

  1. Measure the window width and decide where the track sits. Mark the track position on the ceiling with a pencil, keeping it a few centimetres in front of the window frame.

  2. Hold the track or a bracket against the ceiling and mark the screw holes. Use a spirit level to check the line is straight before drilling.

  3. Drill pilot holes at each mark with a bit slightly narrower than your screws. Go only as deep as the plug length.

  4. Push wall plugs into the holes. For plasterboard ceilings use proper plasterboard fixings instead of plain plugs.

  5. Screw the first bracket to the ceiling, then fit the rest along the marked line. Ask a helper to hold the track while you line up the holes.

  6. Clip or slide the track onto the brackets and tighten any fixing screws. Check the track is level and firmly held.

  7. Fit the end stops and gliders into the track channel. Add the draw cord or wand if your kit includes one.

  8. Hang the curtains on the gliders and test the draw. Adjust the end stops so the curtains close fully without gaps.

Tips and common mistakes

Always use a stepladder on a firm, level floor and have someone steady it while you work overhead.

Check for pipes and cables with a detector before drilling into the ceiling.

Use fixings matched to your ceiling type, as plasterboard needs different plugs from solid concrete.

Mark all holes before drilling so the track stays straight and the curtains hang evenly.

Questions

Can I fit a ceiling curtain track on my own?

You can drill and screw alone, but a helper makes it much easier to hold the track level while you fix it. Use a stepladder and take your time overhead.

What fixings do I need for a plasterboard ceiling?

Use hollow-wall or plasterboard anchors rated for the curtain weight. Plain plugs will pull out of plasterboard under load.

How far from the window should the track go?

Mount it a few centimetres in front of the window frame so the curtains clear the sill and cover the edges. Measure your curtains before drilling.
