Steps
Try the pants on and pinch the side seam at the waistband to see how much extra room you need. Note the amount, usually 2 to 5 cm.
Turn the pants inside out. Use a seam ripper to open the side seam at the waistband, stopping at the bottom of the waistband band.
Cut a fabric piece about twice as wide as the gap you need and a little taller than the waistband. Fold it in half and press or pin it into a pointed gusset shape.
Slide the pointed gusset into the open seam, point down. Pin it in place so the waist measures your target size.
Thread a sharp needle with strong denim thread and knot the end. Sew the gusset to the waistband edges with a ladder stitch so the seam stays hidden.
Sew down both sides of the gusset to the bottom point, keeping stitches small and even for strength.
Turn the pants right side out and check the fit. Adjust the pins or stitching if the waist is still too tight or now too loose.
Trim the inner fabric edge and hand stitch it flat so it does not rub. Press the seam with an iron if you have one.
Tips and common mistakes
Use fabric the same weight and stretch as the pants, or the gusset will pull or pucker.
Keep the ladder stitch small and even so the join stays invisible from the outside.
Pin and test the fit before you sew, since unpicking strong thread is slow.
Sharp needles matter on denim. Replace the needle if it starts to drag.
Questions
Can I do this without a sewing machine?
Yes. The method uses hand stitching only, mainly a ladder or blind stitch with strong thread.
How much wider can the waistband get?
A small gusset of 2 to 5 cm per side is realistic. Larger changes need more fabric and may look bulky.
Will the repair be visible?
If you match the fabric and use a hidden ladder stitch, the join sits in the side seam and is hard to see.
