How to enable ultra dark Liquid Glass mode on iPhone in iOS 27

You will set your iPhone to an ultra dark look in iOS 27: a black lock screen, a dark home screen, dark apps and softer white text. It suits anyone who finds the standard dark mode too bright at night. You need iOS 27 installed and a black or near-black wallpaper.

What you need

Steps

  1. Update your iPhone to iOS 27 first. Open Settings, tap General, then Software Update, and tap Update Now. The dark appearance options only show up after the update finishes.

  2. Turn on system Dark Mode. Go to Settings, tap Display & Brightness, and choose Dark. You can also open Control Center, hold the brightness slider, and tap the dark mode button.

  3. Black out the lock screen. Open Settings, tap Wallpaper, tap Customize under the lock screen, pick a black or very dark photo, and tap Done. Remove bright widgets from this screen.

  4. Do the same for the home screen. In Settings, tap Wallpaper, tap Customize under Home Screen, choose the same black wallpaper, and turn on the dark blur option if your iPhone offers it.

  5. Make your apps go dark. Check that Dark is still selected in Settings, then open each app's own settings and switch its theme to Dark or System.

  6. Dim the brightest whites. Go to Settings, tap Accessibility, then Display & Text Size, and turn on Reduce White Point. Drag the slider to around 50 percent.

  7. Make text easier to read. On the same Display & Text Size screen, turn on Bold Text and Increase Contrast, then use Larger Text to move the font up one or two steps.

  8. Lower the screen brightness. Open Control Center and drag the brightness slider near the bottom. If it keeps creeping up, turn off Auto-Brightness in Settings, Accessibility, Display & Text Size.

Tips and common mistakes

Reduce White Point dims bright whites without washing out colors, so use it before dropping the brightness slider all the way.

Classic Invert flips photos and colors, so avoid it and use per-app dark themes or Smart Invert instead.

Some third party apps ignore system Dark Mode until the developer adds support, so check inside each app.

Black wallpapers only save power on OLED screens when the pixels are truly black, not dark grey.

Questions

Does ultra dark mode save battery?

On iPhones with an OLED screen, black pixels are switched off, so a mostly black interface uses less power than a bright one. The saving is small and depends on what is on screen.

Why do some apps stay light?

Those apps do not support the system dark appearance yet. Look for a theme setting inside the app, or use Smart Invert in Accessibility as a fallback.

Will darker settings make text harder to read?

They can. Turn on Increase Contrast and Bold Text in Accessibility, Display & Text Size to keep text crisp against black backgrounds.
