What you need
Steps
Draw a light circle for the eyeball, then a curved line across it for the eyelid opening. The eyeball is a sphere, so that line curves with it, even in profile.
Sketch the iris as a circle sitting on the front of the sphere. In front view it fills the opening; as the head turns it becomes a narrower oval and slides toward the far corner.
Add the pupil in the middle of the iris and mark a small highlight dot before you shade. The pupil sits on the same curved surface as the iris.
Draw the upper lid thicker than the lower one and add a crease line above it. In profile the lids close into a pointed shape at the outer corner.
Place the eyes on the head before you detail them. Both eyes sit on the same horizontal line and are about one eye width apart.
Shade the pupil and the top of the iris darkest, then work lighter toward the bottom. Keep the white of the eye a light grey, not pure white.
Darken the lash line and add lashes at the outer corner. Leave the highlight dot clean and blend the rest with a stump or tissue.
Tips and common mistakes
Draw the full sphere first, including the part hidden by the lids, so both eyes line up.
Turn your paper or screen upside down to check that the eyes sit level and match in size.
Keep your pencil sharp for the lash line and blunt for soft shading.
Use a reference photo taken at the same angle you are drawing.
Questions
Why do my drawn eyes look flat?
The iris is usually drawn as a flat circle. Curve it around the eyeball and shade the top of it darker so it sits inside the lids.
How do I make the second eye match the first?
Lightly mark both eye shapes before adding any detail, and check the gap between them against one eye width.
Do I need special pencils?
No. A standard HB pencil for sketching and a softer 2B for the dark lash line and pupil are enough.
