Steps

  1. Draw a circle for the cranium. Add a vertical center line down the middle and a horizontal line across the eye level. Keep the lines light so you can erase them later.

  2. For the front view, mark the jaw as a rounded V below the circle. Place the chin on the center line and connect the jaw corners to the sides of the circle.

  3. For the profile view, draw a smaller circle and add a curved line for the face edge. Mark the brow, nose tip and chin along that curve, then shape the jaw back to the ear.

  4. For the 3/4 view, shift the center line toward one side of the circle. The far side of the face gets narrower and the far eye sits closer to the edge.

  5. Place the eyes on the horizontal line. In anime style, make them large and wide, with a thick upper lash line and a small pupil. Space them about one eye width apart in the front view.

  6. Add the nose as a small dot or short line below the eye line. Put the mouth halfway between the nose and chin, then draw the lips as a simple curved line.

  7. Draw the ears between the eye line and the nose line. In profile and 3/4 views, the far ear is partly hidden behind the head.

  8. Sketch the hair as clumps starting from the top of the circle. Let the fringe overlap the forehead and follow the head shape.

  9. Erase the construction lines, then darken the final outlines. Add small details like eyebrows, neck lines and a few hair strands.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep all construction lines light so they erase cleanly after you ink the final face.

Check the eye spacing and chin position before adding details, since small errors grow as you draw.

Practice the same head shape at all three angles so the character stays consistent.

Questions

Do I need special art supplies?

No. A normal pencil, eraser and any paper work fine. A ruler helps with the center and eye lines but is optional.

Why does my 3/4 face look wrong?

The far side is usually too wide. Narrow the far cheek and move the far eye closer to the face edge.

How long should I practice each angle?

Spend about ten minutes per angle. Repeat the basic head shape several times before adding eyes and hair.
