What you need
Steps
Draw a circle for the cranium. This is the top of the skull, so leave room below it for the jaw and chin.
Slice off the sides of the circle with two flat vertical cuts. These mark the temples and give the head its width.
Find the brow line by cutting the circle in half horizontally. Then divide the lower half again to place the nose line.
Draw the jaw from the bottom of each side cut, angling down to a rounded chin on the center line.
Add the center line down the face and the eye line across it. Use these to keep both eyes level and the nose centered.
Place the ears between the brow line and the nose line on each side. Their top sits near the brow.
For a side view, draw the circle then attach the jaw and chin in profile. The ear sits behind the center of the skull.
For perspective, tilt the center line and eye line as a curve. Keep the brow, nose and chin lines following the same curve.
Block in the eyes, nose and mouth on the guide lines, then erase the construction lines once the features sit right.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep your lines light at first so you can erase the sphere and guide lines cleanly.
The eye line always sits halfway down the whole head, not halfway down the face.
Check the head from a distance now and then to catch a tilted center line.
Practice the same view several times before moving to a new angle.
Questions
Do I need special paper or pencils?
No. A normal pencil and plain paper work fine. A 2B pencil gives darker lines and an eraser keeps the guide lines light.
How long does it take to get good at this?
Expect a few weeks of short daily practice. Start with the front view until the proportions feel natural, then try the side and perspective views.
Why does my head look flat?
The guide lines are probably straight instead of curved. In perspective, the brow, nose and chin lines should all curve the same way.
