What you need
Steps
Open the Settings app, tap Wallpaper, then tap Add New Wallpaper. You can also press and hold the lock screen and tap Customise.
Pick a photo, colour, emoji or weather wallpaper. Pinch and drag to crop the image, then tap Add in the top right corner.
Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the same image on both screens, or tap Customise Home Screen to give the home screen its own look.
To restyle the lock screen, press and hold it and tap Customise, then tap the clock to change its font and colour.
Tap the widget boxes under the clock to add weather, battery or calendar, then tap Done to save the lock screen.
For home screen widgets, press and hold an empty area until the icons jiggle, tap the plus button at the top, pick a widget and size, then tap Add Widget.
Drag one app icon on top of another to make a folder, or drag apps down to the dock. Tap Done when you are finished.
To hide a home screen page, press and hold the row of dots above the dock, then untick any page you do not need.
Tips and common mistakes
Custom app icons need the Shortcuts app: build a shortcut that opens the app, then choose Add to Home Screen and pick a photo.
A dark or plain wallpaper keeps the white lock screen text easy to read.
Remove widgets you never check, since they refresh in the background and use battery.
Questions
Do these options work on older iPhones?
The wallpaper editor and lock screen widgets need iOS 16 or later. On older versions you change the background in Settings, then Wallpaper, then Choose a New Wallpaper.
Why did my home screen change when I set a new lock screen?
You probably chose Set as Wallpaper Pair, which copies the lock screen image to the home screen. Tap Customise Home Screen instead to keep a separate one.
Can I undo a wallpaper I do not like?
Yes. Go back to Settings, then Wallpaper, and add the old photo again, or pick one of the standard Apple wallpapers from the same menu.
