How to crochet a daisy flower bookmark for beginners

You will crochet a small daisy flower with a green stem and leaf, then block it flat so it sits neatly between book pages. It suits beginners who can chain and single crochet, and takes about half an hour. All you need is small amounts of DK cotton in white, yellow and green plus a 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm hook.

What you need

Steps

  1. Match your hook to your yarn: use 2.5 mm for fine cotton and up to 3.5 mm for thicker DK. Cotton works best because it blocks flat and survives being pressed in a book.

  2. Start the center with yellow yarn. Make a magic ring, work 6 single crochet into it, then pull the tail tight to close the circle.

  3. Join the white yarn into any yellow stitch. Chain 3, work 2 double crochet into that same stitch, chain 3, then slip stitch into the same stitch to close the first petal.

  4. Repeat that petal into each of the 6 yellow stitches so you end up with 6 petals. Slip stitch into the first petal base, fasten off and weave in the white tail.

  5. Attach green yarn to the back of the flower for the stem. Chain 30 to 40 stitches, or longer if your book is tall, then turn.

  6. Make the leaf at the loose end: chain 8, then slip stitch back down the chain, working 2 slip stitches into the last chain to shape a point.

  7. Fasten off and thread the green tail onto a yarn needle. Sew it back along the stem for a few centimetres so the end disappears, then trim.

  8. Block the flower by pinning it flat on a mat, misting it with water or holding a steam iron above it, and leaving it to dry. This stops the petals curling.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep your tension loose on the petals, or the flower will cup instead of lying flat.

Use cotton rather than acrylic so the bookmark blocks flat and holds its shape.

Leave a 15 cm tail at the flower center so you can sew the stem on neatly later.

Point scissors and the yarn needle away from your fingers when you weave in the ends.

Questions

Do I need a magic ring to start?

No. Chain 4 and slip stitch into the first chain to make a small ring, then work the 6 single crochet into that ring instead.

How much yarn does one bookmark use?

Very little. A few metres of each colour is enough, so it is a good way to use up scraps from bigger projects.

Can a total beginner make this?

Yes, as long as you can chain, single crochet and double crochet. Practise those three stitches on a small scrap square first.
