What you need
Steps
Make a slip knot and place it on your hook. Chain 4 stitches, then join the last chain to the first with a slip stitch to form a small ring.
Chain 3. This counts as your first double crochet. Work 2 more double crochet into the center of the ring.
Chain 2 for the corner, then work 3 double crochet into the ring again. Repeat this twice more so you have four groups of 3 double crochet and four chain-2 corners.
Join to the top of the starting chain 3 with a slip stitch. Slip stitch across to the next corner space.
Chain 3, then work 2 double crochet into the corner space. Chain 2, then work 3 more double crochet into the same corner.
In each of the next three corner spaces, work 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 3.
Repeat the same pattern for each round: 3 double crochet in every side space and 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet in every corner.
Stop when the square is the size you want. Cut the yarn, pull the tail through the loop and tighten. Weave the ends in with a tapestry needle.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep your tension even so the square stays flat and does not curl at the edges.
Count your stitches at the end of each round. Each side should grow by one group of 3 double crochet.
Turn your work after each round if you want a reversible square with no visible join.
Use the same yarn weight for every square if you plan to join them into a blanket.
Questions
What is the difference between a double crochet and a treble crochet granny square?
US double crochet is called treble crochet in UK patterns. The stitches are the same, so check which terms your pattern uses before you start.
How big should a granny square be?
Most blankets use squares about 6 inches (15 cm) across, which is usually four or five rounds. Make one test square and measure it before you commit.
Can I change colors between rounds?
Yes. Finish the round, cut the yarn and join the new color in any corner space with a slip stitch. Weave in the old tail as you go.
