What you need
Steps
Make a slip knot and place it on your hook. Chain 4 stitches, then join the last chain to the first with a slip stitch to form a small ring.
Chain 3. These three chains count as your first double crochet of the round.
Work 2 double crochet into the center of the ring. You now have a group of 3 double crochet.
Chain 2 for the corner space, then work 3 double crochet into the ring again. Repeat this chain 2 plus 3 double crochet two more times.
Join with a slip stitch into the top of the starting chain 3. You now have four groups of 3 double crochet with four corner spaces.
Slip stitch across to the next corner space. Chain 3, then work 2 double crochet into that corner space.
Chain 2, then work 3 double crochet into the same corner space. This completes one corner.
Move to the next corner space and repeat the 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet group. Do this in all four corners, then join with a slip stitch.
For each new round, slip stitch to a corner and repeat the corner group in every corner space. Add one group of 3 double crochet in each side space between corners.
When the square is the size you want, cut the yarn, pull the tail through the loop and weave in the ends with a yarn needle.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep your tension even so the square stays flat and does not pull into a bowl shape.
Always chain 2 at each corner, not 1, or the corners will curl and the square will twist.
Count your groups at the end of each round: a square should have four more groups than the round before.
Turn the square after each round if your stitches lean, which helps keep the edges straight.
Questions
Do I have to change colors?
No. This version uses one color throughout. You can switch colors at any round by fastening off and joining new yarn in a corner.
How big should the square be?
Stop whenever it reaches the size you need. Common sizes are about 6 inches for a blanket square, which is usually four or five rounds.
Why is my granny square twisting?
Twisting usually comes from uneven tension or too few chains at the corners. Keep the chain 2 corners consistent and check that each round has the right number of groups.
