What you need
Steps
Open Discord, click the + button at the bottom of the server list on the left, and choose Create My Own.
Pick For me and my friends or For a club or community, then type a server name, add an icon, and click Create.
Click the server name and choose Invite People. Set the link to never expire, copy it, and send it to your friends.
Right-click the channel list and choose Create Channel. Pick Text or Voice, type a name such as general or Lounge, then click Create Channel.
Right-click the channel list and choose Create Category. Name it something like Chat or Voice, then click Create Category.
Drag each channel onto a category to move it inside. Drag whole categories up or down to change their order in the sidebar.
For a private channel, open its settings, go to Permissions, and turn off View Channel for @everyone.
Tips and common mistakes
Turn off Send Messages for @everyone in a channel's permissions to make it read only for rules or announcements.
Keep the layout simple: two or three categories are easier to read than a long list of tiny ones.
The default invite link expires in 24 hours, so set it to 7 days or never before you share it.
Only the owner and people with Manage Channels can add or move channels, so grant that role carefully.
Questions
Do I need Nitro to create a server?
No. Creating a server, adding channels and inviting friends are free. Nitro only adds perks such as bigger uploads and custom emoji.
Can I delete a server later?
Yes. Right-click the server name, open Server Settings, then choose Delete Server. Only the server owner can do this.
How do I stop random people joining?
Do not post the invite link publicly. You can also set the link to expire and use a private channel with limited permissions for sensitive chats.
