What you need
Steps
Open CapCut on your PC and close any project you are editing. The app should sit on the home screen so it is not writing new cache files while you clean.
Click the Settings gear icon near the top right of the CapCut home screen. Older versions hide it under your profile avatar instead.
Find the cache or storage section in Settings and click the Clear cache button. This removes preview files, thumbnails and temporary render data.
If your version has no clear button, close CapCut and open File Explorer. Type %LOCALAPPDATA%\CapCut into the address bar and press Enter.
Open the Cache and User Data folders and delete the temporary files inside. Leave the Projects folder alone unless you also want to remove saved drafts.
Back in CapCut, right-click any project on the home screen and choose Delete. Repeat for old drafts you no longer need.
Empty the Recycle Bin so the deleted files actually give you space back on the drive.
Type Disk Cleanup in the Start menu, pick your system drive and tick Temporary files. Click OK to remove leftover Windows temp data.
Restart CapCut and check your free space in File Explorer. The app should open and preview faster once the cache is gone.
Tips and common mistakes
Clearing the cache does not touch your exported videos or finished projects, only temporary preview files.
Move finished exports to an external drive so your system drive stays free for editing.
Never delete the whole CapCut folder in AppData, or you will lose your saved projects along with the cache.
If CapCut still lags, lower the preview resolution to 720p or 540p while you edit.
Questions
Does clearing the CapCut cache delete my projects?
No. The cache only holds temporary preview and thumbnail files. Your drafts stay until you delete them yourself from the home screen.
Where does CapCut store files on Windows?
Most of it lives in C:\Users\your name\AppData\Local\CapCut. Typing %LOCALAPPDATA%\CapCut in File Explorer takes you straight there.
How often should I clear it?
Every few weeks is enough for most people. Clear it sooner if free space drops sharply or CapCut starts lagging during playback.
