What you need
Steps
Move your rabbit to a safe closed-off spot with hay and water while you work, or shut the door to one half of the room.
Pick up loose droppings, hay and fur from the floor by hand, then work around the edges where mess builds up.
Tip the litter box contents into a bin bag. Scrub the box with hot water and a pet-safe cleaner, then rinse and dry it fully.
Refill the litter box with a layer of paper-based litter and top it with a fresh handful of hay so your rabbit keeps using it.
Throw out damp or soiled hay from the hay box and pack in fresh hay, keeping it dry and off the floor.
Wipe down hard surfaces, pen panels, baseboards and the outside of the litter box with pet-safe cleaner. Let everything dry.
Wash the food and water bowls with hot soapy water, rinse well and refill with fresh water.
Vacuum the carpet and rugs, going over hay patches a few times, then open a window to air the room out.
Put the boxes and toys back in their usual spots, return your rabbit and watch for a few minutes to see how it settles.
Tips and common mistakes
Spot clean the litter box every day and do this full clean about once a week, since rabbits toilet far more than cats.
Skip pine and cedar shavings and use paper-based litter, as strong wood smells can irritate a rabbit's breathing.
Never use bleach or strong household cleaners around rabbits. Plain white vinegar mixed with water is a safe choice.
Keep a little used litter in the clean box so your rabbit still recognises the spot and does not start marking elsewhere.
Questions
How often should I clean a rabbit room?
Scoop the litter box daily and do a full clean of the box, hay area and floor about once a week. Spot clean straight away if hay or droppings end up on the carpet.
Why is my rabbit pooping outside the litter box after cleaning?
A completely fresh box loses its familiar smell, so your rabbit may remark the area. Leaving a small amount of old litter in the clean box usually stops this within a day.
Do I need an air purifier for a rabbit room?
Not essential, but one with a HEPA filter helps with hay dust and fur. Vacuuming and airing the room out regularly also keeps dust down.
