How to check IMS status on your iPhone to see if RCS works

You can see what cellular services your carrier supports on your iPhone, including whether RCS messaging is available. The check takes about a minute in the Settings app and suits anyone whose RCS texts are not sending or who wants to know if their plan supports it. You need your iPhone and a carrier SIM or eSIM.

Steps

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone. It is the grey gear icon on your home screen or in the App Library.

  2. Tap General in the Settings menu. This opens the device-level options such as software update, storage and About.

  3. Tap About near the top of the General menu. This screen lists your device name, model, serial number and carrier details.

  4. Scroll down to the section for your physical SIM or eSIM. It sits below the device details and is labelled with your carrier and line.

  5. Find the Carrier entry and tap it. The label changes to IMS Status and shows what your carrier supports on that line.

  6. Read the value. Voice and SMS means calls and standard texts only. Voice, SMS and RCS means RCS works, with read receipts, typing indicators and higher quality media.

  7. If RCS is listed but messages still fail, open Settings, tap Apps, then Messages. Turn on the RCS Messaging toggle.

  8. Stay on the About screen for a few seconds after an update or carrier switch. A carrier settings update prompt may appear at the bottom, and you can accept it there.

Tips and common mistakes

IMS Status shows what your carrier supports, not whether the RCS toggle is on, so check both places.

RCS only works when the other person also uses RCS on a compatible phone, so a green bubble may be their device, not yours.

If no carrier settings update appears, restart your iPhone and open the About screen again.

Take a screenshot of the IMS Status line before calling your carrier so support can see what your phone reports.

Questions

What does IMS status mean on an iPhone?

It shows which services your carrier has enabled for that line: voice calls, SMS, and whether RCS messaging is supported. It does not turn anything on by itself.

Why does IMS status show RCS but I still cannot send RCS messages?

The RCS Messaging toggle in Settings, Apps, Messages may be off, or your carrier settings may be out of date. Check both, then restart the phone.

Can I check IMS status on a dual SIM iPhone?

Yes. Scroll to each SIM or eSIM section in the About screen and tap the Carrier row for each line separately.
