Steps
Let all the air out of the tyre. Remove the valve core with the valve core remover so the tyre can fully deflate and the bead can loosen.
Break the bead on both sides by pushing the tyre sidewall down away from the rim edge. Work your way around the whole wheel until the bead sits loose.
Clip rim protectors onto the rim lip where you will lever. This stops the tyre irons from scratching or gouging the rim.
Push the first tyre iron under the bead and lever it over the rim. Hold it there and hook it to a spoke if you can.
Insert a second iron a few inches along and work around the rim, keeping the bead in the rim's drop centre so you have slack.
Pull the tube out if you have one, then lift the whole tyre off the rim. Check the inside of the tyre and rim for sharp objects.
Fit the new tube or tyre. Seat one side of the bead by hand, then work the second side over the rim with the irons.
Refit the valve core and inflate slowly. Check that the bead seats evenly all the way around on both sides before riding.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep the opposite side of the tyre pushed into the rim's drop centre, or you will fight the bead the whole way.
Use soapy water on the bead to help it slide on and seat.
Warm the tyre in the sun first if it is stiff and cold.
Check the tyre is seated evenly all round before you inflate to full pressure.
Questions
Do I really need four tyre irons?
Four irons make the job much easier because you can hold several sections of bead at once. Two can work but you will struggle more.
Can I do this without rim protectors?
Yes, but the irons can scratch or gouge the rim lip. Rim protectors are cheap and save your wheels.
How do I know the bead is seated?
Look for an even line around the sidewall next to the rim on both sides. If it sits unevenly, deflate and reseat it.
