Steps
Put your seedlings in the brightest spot you have, ideally 4 to 6 hours of direct sun a day. Keep them warm, above 15C, and away from cold draughts and air conditioning.
Pot up each seedling when roots start showing at the drainage holes. Choose a pot one size bigger, fill it with free-draining potting mix and set the plant at the same depth it grew before.
Water when the top 2cm of mix feels dry to your finger. Soak the pot until water runs out of the bottom, then let it drain fully and never leave the pot standing in water.
Feed with half-strength liquid fertiliser every two weeks through spring and summer. Hold off in winter, when growth slows and roots cannot use the extra salts.
Pinch out the tip of the stem once the seedling has 4 or 5 sets of leaves. This pushes side shoots and gives you a bushier plant instead of one tall stick.
Check the undersides of leaves each week for aphids, whitefly and spider mites. Wipe small numbers off with a damp cloth or spray with insecticidal soap in the evening.
Move pots indoors, into a greenhouse or onto a sheltered porch when night temperatures drop below 10C. Cut watering back but keep the plant in good light through winter.
Tips and common mistakes
Yellow leaves usually mean soggy mix or cold roots, so check drainage before adding more fertiliser.
Never feed a dry plant, water first so you do not burn the young roots.
Hardening off matters: bring seedlings outside for a few hours a day over a week before leaving them out.
Questions
How often should I water hibiscus seedlings?
Check every two or three days and water only when the top of the mix feels dry. Small pots dry fast in heat, but steady damp causes root rot.
When will the seedlings flower?
Most tropical hibiscus started from seed bloom in their first or second year if they get enough sun and warmth. Pinching early delays flowers slightly but gives a stronger plant.
Can hibiscus seedlings stay outside in winter?
Only in frost-free climates. Below about 10C at night, bring them indoors or into a greenhouse and keep them in bright light.
