What you need
Steps
Open Power BI Desktop and go to File, then Options and settings, then Options. Under Preview features, tick the Gantt chart option and click OK.
Restart Power BI Desktop when prompted so the preview visual becomes available in the Visualizations pane.
Load your project table, then click the Gantt chart icon in the Visualizations pane to add an empty visual to the report canvas.
Drag your task name field into the Task or Category well, then drag the start date into Start and the end date into End.
If task names are cut off, select the visual and widen the category column in the format pane, or resize the visual on the canvas.
Open the format pane and adjust the axis, bar colors and zoom slider so the timeline fits your date range.
To flag late work, add a measure that returns a color when the end date is before today, then apply it under conditional formatting for the bar color.
Check the preview limitations, such as missing milestone markers or limited interactivity, and save your report.
Tips and common mistakes
Preview features can change or break between Power BI updates, so test the visual before sharing the report widely.
Use a proper date column, not text, or the Gantt bars will not place correctly on the timeline.
Keep the zoom slider visible so viewers can move between weeks and months without editing the report.
Questions
Do I need a custom visual for a Gantt chart in Power BI?
No. The native Gantt chart is available as a preview feature you turn on in Options. You can still use custom visuals if you need features the preview lacks.
Why are my task names cut off?
The category column is too narrow. Widen it in the format pane or make the visual larger on the canvas.
How do I show overdue tasks in red?
Create a measure that returns red when the end date is before today, then apply it as conditional formatting on the bar color.
