What you need
Steps
Mark the cabin footprint and dig down below the frost line. In cold climates, footings must sit deep enough that frost heave cannot lift them.
Build formwork and set rebar cages in each hole. Pour concrete footings and let them cure fully before loading them.
Lay pressure-treated beams on the footings and frame the floor joists across them. Check the frame is square and level before you go further.
Nail or screw down the subfloor panels over the joists. Stagger the joints and leave a small gap at the edges for movement.
Peel and scribe each log, then cut notches so the logs stack in a friction fit. Alternate the log ends at the corners to lock the walls.
Frame the roof structure over the top logs and fix metal roofing sheets with overlapping seams. Work from ladders only on firm, level ground.
Fit window and door bucks with a gap above them so the settling timber does not crush the frames. Seal the edges against drafts.
Build the staircase and frame the loft floor joists. Keep the loft joists level and tie them into the wall structure.
Install the wood stove on a non-combustible hearth with the correct clearance to walls. Run the stove pipe up through a properly insulated roof flashing.
Finish the inside with sheathing, plywood ceiling and laminate flooring, then fit the kitchen cabinets and sink.
Tips and common mistakes
Leave a settling gap above windows and doors in log walls, or the frames will bind as the timber dries.
Keep concrete footings below the local frost depth to avoid heave cracking the floor frame.
Check stove clearances and pipe insulation against the maker's manual before the first fire.
Get a second person for lifting logs and roofing sheets, and wear eye and hand protection.
Questions
How deep do the footings need to be?
They must reach below your local frost line, which varies by region. Check your local building rules before digging.
Why do log cabin windows need a gap above them?
Fresh logs shrink as they dry, so the wall settles. A gap above the frame stops the timber from pressing down on the window.
Can I build this alone?
Small parts are manageable solo, but logs, roof sheets and the stove are heavy. Plan for help on those stages.
