What you need

Steps

  1. Download or print the English syllabus for your target exam. List every topic, such as grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, error spotting, cloze test and descriptive writing.

  2. Set a daily block of 60 to 90 minutes. Split it into 30 minutes grammar, 20 minutes vocabulary, 20 minutes reading and 10 minutes review, then adjust to your exam.

  3. Make short notes for each grammar rule on one page. Write the rule, two correct examples and three common mistakes, then add a one-line summary at the top.

  4. Use index cards for new words. Put the word, meaning, part of speech and one example sentence on the front, and a short test question on the back.

  5. Practise one past paper section under a timer each week. Mark it immediately and write every wrong answer and its reason in your notes.

  6. Read one newspaper editorial for 15 minutes daily. Note five new words, one useful phrase and one sentence you can reuse in descriptive writing.

  7. Review your short notes for 10 minutes each morning and test yourself at the end of the week without looking at the answers.

  8. Record your scores and weak topics in a simple table. After two weeks, give more time to the sections with the lowest scores.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep each note to one page so you can revise it in a few minutes.

Write the reason for every mistake, not just the correct option.

Revise old vocabulary before adding a new set of 10 to 15 words.

Do at least one timed section each week to build speed.

Questions

Do I need coaching to follow this plan?

No. A syllabus, past papers and regular review are enough to start, though coaching can help if you need structure.

How many new words should I learn each day?

Start with 10 to 15 words a day and revise them for three days before adding more.

How soon will my score improve?

Progress varies. Give the routine a few weeks of daily practice and use your score table to judge what needs more work.
