What you need
Steps
Brush your husky thoroughly before the bath. Work out loose undercoat with a rake so wet fur does not clump into mats.
Put a non-slip mat in the tub and run lukewarm water, around 37 to 38 degrees Celsius. Test it on your wrist first.
Wet the coat in sections, starting at the back and working down. Push water through the thick undercoat with your fingers, not just the top layer.
Dilute dog shampoo with water in a cup and pour it along the back. Massage it into the coat in small circles, avoiding eyes, ears and muzzle.
Rinse until the water runs clear, then rinse again. Leftover shampoo in a double coat causes itching and dull fur.
Squeeze excess water from the legs and body with your hands, then towel dry in the direction of the fur.
Dry the undercoat fully with a pet dryer on cool or low heat, or towel and air dry in a warm room. Never leave a husky damp.
Brush again once dry to lift the coat and remove any remaining loose fur.
Tips and common mistakes
Never use human shampoo or dish soap on a dog, as it strips the coat and skin.
Keep water out of the ears and dry them gently afterwards to help prevent infections.
Bathe a double-coated dog only every 6 to 8 weeks unless it is dirty, as frequent washing dries the skin.
Use a low setting on the dryer and keep it moving so you do not burn the skin.
Questions
How often should I bathe a Siberian Husky?
Every 6 to 8 weeks is usually enough. Huskies have a self-cleaning coat, so bathe more often only if the dog is genuinely dirty or smelly.
Can I bathe my husky in cold water?
Use lukewarm water, not cold. Cold water is uncomfortable and does not clean the coat as well.
Do I need to dry a husky after a bath?
Yes. A thick undercoat holds water for hours, so dry it fully to avoid skin problems and a damp dog smell.
