Steps
Update Snapseed from the App Store, open the app and load the photo you want to edit. The new Motion Blur tool is available on iOS as of the release date.
Tap Tools, then Motion Blur. The tool uses AI to pick out subjects and backgrounds, so give it a moment to analyse the photo before you adjust anything.
Choose All to apply blur across the whole frame, then set Blur Strength. This suits simple speed effects where nothing needs to stay sharp.
Pick Background to keep your subject sharp and blur everything around it. This is the setting for panning shots of cars, cyclists and motorcycles.
Pick Subject to blur only the main subject and leave the background sharp. Use it for effects like a spinning wheel or a swinging arm.
Use Subject Subregion to add blur to one part of a subject, such as the wheels of an angled car. Add more subregions if one area is not enough.
Drag on the photo to set the blur Direction, then raise Acceleration so the blur builds towards the edges. Match the direction to the way the subject is moving.
To stack two effects, go back to View edits and add a second Motion Blur pass with different settings, then compare the two versions.
Open Chromatic Aberration to add coloured lens fringing. Adjust Color Balance, Falloff and Anamorphic until the edges look stylised but not messy.
Tap the tick to apply, then use Export to save a copy. Check the edges at full size before you share the photo.
Tips and common mistakes
Motion blur looks fake when the direction does not match the subject's movement, so check the wheels or legs first.
Keep Blur Strength low with Background and raise it only when the shot looks too static.
Leave some space in front of the moving subject so the blur has room to travel.
Use chromatic aberration sparingly, since a little fringing reads as a lens effect and a lot reads as a mistake.
Questions
Is the Snapseed Motion Blur tool free?
Yes. Snapseed is a free app, so the Motion Blur and Chromatic Aberration tools cost nothing extra once you update.
Does Motion Blur work on Android?
At the time of the video the new tool was iOS only. Check for a Snapseed update on Android before you try it.
Can I blur just one part of the photo?
Yes. Subject Subregion lets you add blur to selected areas, while All blurs the entire frame.
